What We're Doing

The oil and gas industry is Canada’s biggest investor in research and development into new, better ways of protecting the environment.

Technology Summary by CAPP President David Collyer

"The oil and gas industry in Canada is founded on our ability to apply technological innovation to meeting the challenges that our industry faces."

Doing Our Part

The Canadian oil and gas industry fully recognizes that we must do our part in addressing GHG emissions.

  • We’ve reduced GHG emissions per barrel from oil sands by 29% since 1990.
  • Natural gas, a lower carbon fuel, is a mainstay of our business and could play a larger role in meeting energy demand in the future.
  • We will continue to apply leading innovation and technology in our industry to help deliver more energy with lower GHG emissions per barrel.
  • Energy efficiency on the front-end of production (such as co-generation), application of technology to reduce emissions from the back-end of production (such as lower temperature extraction, use of solvents, new heat sources), along with mitigation of emissions from production (such as carbon capture and storage) will all contribute to our ongoing improvements in emissions performance.
  • Technology is a key for our improved performance.
  • Our industry will continue to focus on what we do best – responsibly developing Canada’s abundant oil and gas resources in the interests of all Canadians.
  • We understand that this cannot be accomplished if the oil and gas industry does not continue to do its part in addressing GHG emissions and we are firmly committed to doing so.

Canada’s oil and gas industry provides GHG solutions

Considerable natural resources are in Canadian hands. This is a good thing.

29% Better

From 1990 to 2011, GHG emissions associated with
every barrel of oil sands crude produced have
been reduced by 29%. We are serious about
addressing GHGs. Source: Environment Canada

Advancing Technology = Lower GHG emissions

Technology enables us to deliver more energy (and more jobs, royalties and taxes) with fewer GHG emissions per barrel of oil equivalent.

Billions of dollars invested every year

$88 billion was invested by the oil and gas industry in 2008 and 2009 — Canada’s largest single private sector investor. 2010 investment is projected at $42 billion.

Diversity

With energy demand increasing, all sources of energy – renewables to oil sands – will be needed.

Lower Carbon

Canada has large reserves of natural gas, a lower carbon fuel. Natural gas could play an even larger role in meeting our energy needs.
