Alberta is Canada’s largest oil and natural gas producer and is home to vast deposits of oil sands. Producers are working hard to minimize their environmental impact.
Alberta’s Resources
Alberta is home to the oil sands, which contain 173 billion barrels of oil.
To help put this into context, oil sands can meet Canada's demand for petroleum products like gasoline and diesel (based on our current consumption) for 250 years. Canada’s oil sands place the country second only to Saudi Arabia in terms of global oil reserves.
Alberta also has plentiful natural gas – estimated at 223 trillion cubic feet (tcf), of which 136 tcf has been produced. To put that into context, one tcf of natural gas will heat all gas-heated homes in Canada – almost five million – for one year.
Respecting Alberta’s Environment
We work hard to make sure we're minimizing our impact on the environment in every area where we operate. In Alberta, this is of the utmost importance, because our operations are extensive and include the oil sands. Some of the environmental issues we’re working on in Alberta include:
Searching for innovative ways to continually manage our oil sands impacts
Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions
Keeping the air clean
Using water wisely
Protecting residents that live near sour gas wells
Returning the land we work on to a sustainable landscape
Protecting the wildlife that live on the land where we operate
