Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore oil and gas industry has three producing projects and significant potential for future natural gas development.
With significant deposits of crude oil, Newfoundland and Labrador is currently producing over 300,000 barrels of oil per day from its three current offshore oil projects – Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose. Newfoundland and Labrador’s fourth offshore oil development, Hebron, is expected to begin production by 2017. Newfoundland and Labrador also has the potential for natural gas development in the future.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s Resources
Offshore Newfoundland and Labrador are significant deposits of crude oil. Newfoundland and Labrador also has significant natural gas potential. The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board estimates that there are over 10 trillion cubic feet of natural gas offshore. No natural gas is currently being produced.
Newfoundland and Labrador's provincial budget for 2009/2010 forecasts a reduction of almost 50 per cent to $1.3 billion or 24 per cent of all revenues (federal and provincial sources). This reduction is due to a forecast of lower oil prices and lower production.

Respecting Newfoundland and Labrador’s Environment
We work hard to minimize our impact on the environment in every area where we operate. Some of the environmental issues we’re working on in Newfoundland and Labrador include:
Ensuring we protect the offshore environment
Communicating openly with the fishing industry
Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions
Keeping the air clean
Offshore Drilling
The oil and gas industry in Canada has been involved in offshore exploration and development since 1964. The industry and companies involved in offshore operations take potential risks very seriously. Prevention is the best line of defense against spills. Read more
