Land

Canadians demand that our industry returns developed areas back to a sustainable landscape.

Tailings Ponds

The issue

The size of tailings ponds and the time it takes to return them to a sustainable landscape, as well as the protection of wildlife are issues our industry must address.

What we're doing

Through research, technology and efficient production, our industry is reducing the size of tailings ponds to protect wildlife, and developing new techniques to return them to a sustainable landscape.

Land & Reclamation

The issue

From drilling one well to mining for oil sands, oil and gas activity changes the land we work on.

What we're doing

Returning land back to a sustainable landscape (reclamation) is a legal obligation and requires from us an ongoing commitment to improve our practices. We do this through various reclamation projects, research and innovation, and by working with a variety of stakeholders.

Protecting Wildlife

Protecting Wildlife

The issue

The reality remains that our industry has had negative effects on wildlife, particularly in Western Canada.

What we're doing

Reducing our footprint, managing tailings ponds, using low-impact seismic, collaborating with others and supporting wildlife projects are some of the ways we are protecting wildlife.

Did you know?

Only 20 per cent of Canada’s oil sands can be mined with large trucks and shovels – the other 80 per cent is deep underground and must be extracted using specialized techniques.
