We’re committed to being good neighbours.
The Issue: Maintaining Positive Relationships
As our industry continues to grow, so do the populations of small towns and rural areas across Canada. As a result, oil and gas development and community lines often cross over. We know that many landowners have questions and concerns about the effects of our operations on human and animal health, and we know we have a responsibility to understand and respond to these concerns.
What We’re Doing: Listening and Responding to Concerns
Participating and Supporting Synergy Alberta
We’re committed to being good neighbours by listening and responding to landowner concerns. One example of this commitment includes our participation in Synergy Alberta – a non-profit society that provides Alberta residents, landowners and key stakeholders, who share their land base with industry activities, an opportunity to learn, network and share information.
Getting your feedback
Our industry works closely with the people whose land is affected by oil and gas development. We hold open houses and gather feedback, and use this information to make important development decisions. We also give back to the communities in which we work and operate by providing funding support to many local charitable and community-based organizations.
CAPP's Stewardship Report: People
While there are benefits nationwide, there are also challenges. Some rural residents have experienced increased construction activity and traffic on local roads. Some communities near development areas have struggled to meet demands for new infrastructure, housing, and schools for their rapidly expanding populations. And oil and gas companies have witnessed substantial cost increases associated with labour, equipment, and materials shortages.
The challenge for the industry is to minimize social impacts, while contributing to the economic wellbeing of Canadians. Consultation with stakeholders is pivotal. Hosting meetings with local residents is a regulatory requirement, and it’s something our industry has embraced as a means to gain insight into local conditions, concerns, and environmental issues. By learning about the communities where we work, we can make relevant and meaningful contributions to those who live there.
