People

In 2008, the upstream oil and gas industry directly and indirectly employed more than 500,000 Canadians, invested $54 billion in the Canadian economy, and contributed $30 billion in royalties, taxes, and other payments to municipalities, provinces, and the federal government.

Land

From drilling a single well to mining for oil sands, oil and gas activity changes the landscape. One of the most effective ways to tackle this challenge is to minimize the zone of operations and its impact. We do this by avoiding sensitive habitats, using narrow seismic lines, optimizing the area needed for well sites, and working with other users to share roads and pipelines.

Water

As Canada’s oil and gas industry grows, so does the demand on water resources. Industry often uses water to flood reservoirs to enhance oil recovery and in oil and gas plant processes. Use of other miscible agents, such as carbon dioxide, polymers and saline groundwater, to enhance recovery helps reduce dependency on fresh water resources. In fact, saline groundwater accounts for about one quarter of the water used for in situ oil sands and enhanced oil recovery techniques.

Air

Climate change is attributed to the accumulation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, such as carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are emitted in the production of oil and natural gas from various processes such as fuel combustion and venting. The challenge we all face is how to reduce GHG emissions when the demand for energy is growing.

Safety

We strive to ensure that every person at every job site arrives home safely at the end of each workday. Safety is strongly emphasized, and we require that all employees have the training they need to remain safe on the job.

Flaring & Venting

Flaring and venting are oil and gas industry activities that impact the environment through air and GHG emissions, such as methane and sulphur dioxide. Flaring is controlled burning of natural gas; venting refers to natural gas that is released.

Today Tomorrow

CAPP Environmental Stewardship The actions we take today have a profound effect tomorrow, and long into the future.

This fact of life is respected and reflected in every aspect of petroleum industry operations. As stewards of Canada’s resources, we strive to reduce our impact on the environment while promoting the well-being of our people and the communities we serve. Stewardship also means working toward a better future – constantly improving performance, and earning the confidence of Canadians through real progress. Collectively, CAPP members operate under a balanced “3E” approach – we are committed to Economic growth, Environmental protection, and a secure and reliable Energy supply.

Dedication to the ideals of stewardship is integral to our industry, and is a requirement of CAPP membership. This commitment is far more than a promise. Annually, CAPP collects member company data to accurately tell the story of our progress in an honest and transparent format. We’ve also included selected data, along with examples of stewardship in action.

The methodology used for data collection in 2008 was consistent with previous years. Information used in this report was extracted from mandatory data provided by our members.

2007 Stewardship Benchmarking

CAPP follows a methodology of collecting and verifying data from our members for our Stewardship Report. The responsibility for submitting accurate data resides with each company. A third party audit conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) reviewed the data collection, validation and reporting procedures.
