The development of the oil sands presents significant environmental challenges. The public is concerned about the environmental impacts of oil sands development. Governments are responding with new laws and policies to protect the environment and maintain energy and economic security. Canada's oil and gas industry is making progress in addressing environmental challenges, but industry needs to do more. New technologies continue to be critical to Industrys efforts to reduce impacts on air, land and water. The future of the industry depends on demonstrating our commitment to responsible resource development. This document provides an overview of environmental challenges associated with developing the oil sands, related regulations and industry actions.
