This Best Management Practice provides guidance for operating staff to identify ways to improve the thermal efficiency of fired heaters at upstream oil and gas facilities. The determination of fuel gas efficiency is made by prescribed tests and calculations that yield the thermal efficiency of the heater based upon the fuel input and stack gas losses. This measure of performance has the advantages of being well understood, easy to calculate and within the capability of inexpensive combustion gas analyzers.
