“With the U.S. trade war creating significant economic uncertainty, we must face the fact that Canada will struggle to compete with the U.S. for capital as it initiates a dramatic reset of its climate and energy policy, along with its fiscal and regulatory frameworks.
Canada must confront this threat from the U.S. by unleashing its resource potential. To do this, CAPP is calling for an urgent comprehensive policy reset to restore predictability and efficiency to our regulatory system. This is not the time to continue the pattern of the past decade of layering on policy complexity and cost on Canadian industries. This means government needs to look at all energy and climate policies to find greater efficiency that will lower costs, speed up approval and construction timelines, and position Canada as a competitive place for investment. The federal carbon levy on large emitters is an example of a policy that is not globally cost competitive and should be repealed to allow provincial governments to set more suitable carbon regulations.”
