Saskatchewan Builds on Oil and Natural Gas

In Saskatchewan, when prairie grit meets global ambition, it creates an economy built on oil and natural gas—and one that punches well above its weight on the world stage.

Oil and natural gas are foundational to Saskatchewan’s economy. The sector supports thousands of skilled jobs, drives investment across rural and urban communities, and generates the revenues that fund public services Canadians rely on every day. The industry goes far beyond production, and includes advanced infrastructure, innovative technologies, and a highly skilled workforce.

By building on oil and natural gas, Saskatchewan shows how provincial strengths power national prosperity. With the right conditions, this prairie‑built advantage positions Canada as a reliable energy supplier, and a responsible energy superpower ready to meet growing demand.

Crude oil alone was Saskatchewan’s number one export in 2024. Together, oil and natural gas generated more than $13 billion in exports, accounting for over a quarter of all goods sold internationally. With one in every four export dollars tied to oil and gas, and with strong global demand, the sector remains essential to sustaining and expanding the province’s economic strength.

Saskatchewan’s oil and gas industry supports vibrant communities and essential public services across the province. The sector creates opportunities for thousands of Saskatchewanians, and generates revenue that helps fund programs that benefit everyone:

  • In fiscal year 2023-24, oil and natural gas royalty revenue accounted for 5% of the Government of Saskatchewan’s total revenue. These funds help fund essential provincial services—including healthcare, education, and social programs.
  • In 2024, the industry contributed $300 million in municipal taxes, helping local governments deliver services like infrastructure, emergency response, and community development.
  • The sector accounted for over 16,000 direct jobs (about 3% of all direct employment in the province), and an estimated 40,000 direct and indirect jobs in 2024, supporting families and communities the province.

The industry contributes meaningfully to economic reconciliation with Indigenous communities, organizations and businesses:
